Default Camera Bags are just Purses...

I'm bored so I thought I'd share a Blog Post I made a while ago. Many have found it quite funny... Hope you enjoy it.

Camera Bags are just Purses

Understanding this fact has really improved my life and it can improve yours as well.
I came to this bit of knowledge quite by accident.

It was a cloudy rainy day and I was sitting on the porch with my wife.
It went something like this:

me: "You know, I really should sell some of my camera stuff I never use."

her: "Probably."
"Why do you have so many camera bags anyways?"

me: "I'm not getting rid of any camera bags!"
"Bags are like purses."

No sooner had the words left my mouth when the clouds parted, a brilliant beam of light shone upon us, and we were overcome by a feeling of peace and tranquility!

Why?
Because we UNDERSTOOD each other!

Let me explain:

If you are a owner of purses partnered with a photographer, I don't know why you are reading this but think of it this way:
You need a large purse when you need to bring a lot of stuff with you.
You need a smaller purse when you want to carry less.
You need a nicer purse for more formal situations.
You need a winter purse for when the weather is crappy.
You need a summer purse for....I don't know why, but you do.
And every purse must have the appropriate dividers and pockets to make them suitable for the job.

Camera bags are like that.

If you are a photographer partnered with the owner of purses think of it this way:
You need a large camera bag for all of your lenses, flashes, filters, etc etc when you want to carry a lot of stuff with you.
You need a smaller camera bag for maybe just a lens and filters when you want to carry less.
You need a "winter" camera bag with rain cover for when the weather is crappy.
You need a summer camera bag for....I don't know why, but I have one.
And every camera bag must have the appropriate dividers and pockets to make them suitable for the job.

Purses are like that.

If you are a photographer and the owner of purses....well, this all probably makes complete sense to you and you are probably wondering how this qualifies as any kind of revelation in the first place....

But, if you are the non-photographer partnered with said photographer/purse owner.....well, you're screwed....
Maybe you can think of bags kind of like tool boxes.
I have a lot of tool boxes...I have one for plumbing, one for electrical, one for automotive, one for woodworking, I've got large tool boxes for storage and "on site" work. I have smaller tool boxes for carrying the essentials off site....
Bags are kind of like that..but different.

So now you understand how it works. And now we have complete harmony in our house!

My wife understands my camera bags. She doesn't question why I have so many camera bags or why they cost so much. She doesn't even question the idea I might need another one!

And I understand my wife's purses.....Well, ok. I don't "really understand but I think I "get the gist of it."
But I don't really care.
.
.
.
.
The important thing is, now she understands my camera bags.

This is a really bad post for me !!!
Now that I've read it, how can I convince my wife to get rid of some of her purses to make room for my camera bags?

As an owner of camera bags & purses, I can sure relate! But to be honest, I despised purses when I was younger & still haven't quite figured out why women need them (even though I own several!). That said, my camera bags also double as my day to day purses. I have one camera bag I use for interviews (messenger bag & holds things like my resumes & stuff without messing them up), my knock around bag I've had & still use pretty much every day for the past decade (maybe longer), & a back pack for those occasions when I am out & about & need more space.

I have also looked at those "pursey" type camera bags made specifically for women, but have yet to find one I like. Most are too feminine, & I am still a tomboy...don't want ruffles or flowers or other "girly" details.

You don't. Just be glad if she doesn't give you crap about your camera bags.

I don't like carrying camera bags either, but they are "necessary".
I must confess, I have carried that very same Tamrac bag as a "murse" before....

I picked up a nice padded insert off ebay, stuck it inside my beat up old messenger bag and it works great. It doesn't scream - Camera bag! Take me! Take me!

I fall directly into this category

I have one big backpack for my entire gearset
I have one medium-sized shoulder bag for vacations, day trips, or when I dont need EVERYTHING
I have one small shoulder bag for my film gear
I have one backpack for when I only need minimal gear (body, lens, flash) and my laptop.

This isnt counting my belt/pouch system and the 2 bags I use for business (portfolio bag and laptop briefcase).

It also doesnt count the several bags I'm interested in for various other things (camera related and notsomuch). Im just as bad as my girlfriend at gawking at bags: mine are just "slightly" less expensive. And made of ripstop nylon instead of leather or whatnot. And they arent carried by models in Milan.
