Default team photo programs for mac's

I bought a mac this spring and due to life circumstances I have not really been able to do much with my photography since this time. Now it is fall and my boys football team has asked me once again to do their team and sponsor photos. I bought aperture to use for photos but I can not seem to make the sponsor pic like I want to (team pic with sponsored player in a 'cameo' in the corner with text on the photo)
If you have a mac and do these types of pics what programs do you use? I have not been able to justify buying photoshop yet (life circumstances again) so I was hoping to find a cheaper way to go about it. I do not get paid for these photos either-- it is my donation to the team. Any ideas?

GIMP can do everything that photoshop can, and it's free. Not sure if it's available on a mac though.

I *think* Aperture is most similar to Lightroom and doesn't let you do layers or text editing. Someone with Aperture can answer that more definitively. I have a mac and use Photoshop for creating collages, adding text layers and other such manipulations.

I have a Mac, and have loaded Aperture and The Gimp onto it. Aperture doesn't do text type things, but Gimp will do this just fine on a Mac.

Good luck.
