Hmmm... I think the problem here is you're holding the camera upside down.
The little wheel is to allow you to roll the camera along the ground without scratching it. I think the reason you didn't get the photos of the lady with the hat is because the fous was wrong..On the dial on the lens, there should be a little sideways number 8. If you set it to that, and make sure you're 8 feet away (Oh um, maybe that should be 8 meters, maybe someone can correct me?) then it should all work fine. PSAM means "Pretty Stupid Automatic Mode".. I would avoid those, if anyone sees you using them, they'll think you're an idiot. They don't do much anyway. Have you not found how to switch the camera to "Manual" mode? If you do that, the manual appears on the screen on the back for easy reading.
