Default Tuesday Rant!

My turn One of my biggest pet peeves are kids that don't speak proper English. My son got thumped by a local lad (I watched him out of my bedroom window) so I went up to his house to speak to his mum. The lad totally denied the whole thing and stood hiding behind his mum saying "I ain't done nuffink". "Aint done nuffink". What kind of English is that!! I have to constantly correct my daughter who says "I done this and I done that" "Should of instead of should have". One day they'll thank me for teaching them grammar when they sit their GCSE's

Rant over.

Oh Dear.. I was expecting your peeve to be "Kids thumping other kids for no reason then denying it!"

I'm with you on the grammar issue, Rachel. My daughter has a bad habit of saying "I seen" instead of "I saw" or "I've seen". I hope that constant correction will get the message through.

Correct grammar is much, much more important.

I've heard people say that since kids use so many texting phrases when they text each other, that they have trouble spelling correctly or using proper grammar when they talk.
If you usually spell 'thanks' like 'thanx,' or 'tonight' like 'tonite' when you're texting, it would be hard to remember to spell them right in a spelling test. Or pronounce them right when you're talking.
BTW, apparently 'ain't' is a word. It's in the online dictionary. Ain't | Define Ain't at Dictionary.com
Personally, I never use the word 'ain't.' It doesn't sound right.
And I ain't gonna say ain't five times, 'cause ain't ain't a word, and it just ain't right.

My turn to complain... What bugs me is when people don't use capital letters, punctuation marks, or commas when they type; and they make their sentences go on and on for forever. It makes it impossible to read. Example-

you know what i mean don't you i'm sure you do and you need to take a look at this picture because it is the best one you will see anywhere in alabama. you need to take a look at this and tell me what you think and then maybe buy a copy of it because that would make me happiest of anyone ever. thanks for reading this im sure youre very nice you know what i mean im sure you do you know.

See what I mean? Wasn't that just impossible to read? Strangely, I seem to have a knack for it though.

I cannot understand how a kid (young goat) can speak at all.
Children maybe but not a kid.

There is no inherent grammatical problem with "I ain't done nuffink". The problem with that wording is that it's a perfectly grammatical statement in a low-status dialect, and apparently made here by an obnoxious junior reprobate.

Low-status dialects are inherently life-limiting, so they're worth opposing on that basis, so I don't disagree with your general emotional point. It's just the details of the argument that I take some issue with.

This is very true. You know there's a problem when the teachers (any subject, not just english) have to remind the students that "you" is not spelled "u", and that "r" is not a word.

Ah but it's not. It says it's non-standard. (i.e. slang/improper)

Well, at least it's in the dictionary! You have to give them credit for that!
