Default lens advice

hi all
Being new to the SLR world im just after some advice.
Most of my photography is scenic. I travel the outback and bush so lots of water falls, lookouts and some wildlife
I just purchased a canon EOS 10D for $50 as i thought i could "give it a go"
hopfully my intrest can evolve then i will upgrade.
the photos i take are just for me to keep and to show friends.

So my question is the lens i have is 22 - 70mm and im after somthing with more zoom.
I went to a few camera places and was quoted approx $300 for a 70-250 stableized lens
But as im still testing the waters with the whole SLR scene its a bit more then i wanted to commit to especilly if I upgrade.
I found this on ebay and am just wondering is this somthing that im after or am i completly on the wrong wavelength

If you want to shoot distant wild life, or some sports in daylight, then that is a very cheap way to go.

Not much good for most landscapes & waterfall etc.

I don't think you will be happy with that. It's really more of a special use toy.

You really need a lens with an adjustable aperture, that one is fixed at f8. Yes, you can control exposure with shutter speed and iso, but I think you'll be better off ( and learn more) putting the money towards the Canon lens.

Mirror lens. Super cheap. Super dim. Not so sharp. Funky donut-shaped oof highlights. Given that it's f/8, you won't have any autofocus, either. Probably not what you're hoping for.

dSLR gear costs. Them's the breaks. You got an amazing deal on your camera body, but deals like that are few and far between.

My recommendation would be to see if you can find an old EF-S 18-55 kit lens (preferably the IS version) so you can go wider for the big big vistas of landscapes--most folks dump theirs so it should be easy to find for relatively little money. And then look for a EF-S 55-250 IS, which here in the US goes for about $250 new. It ain't the greatest or fastest, but it's a decent performer, and an ok "training wheels" lens, like the 18-55 kit. Third "training wheels" lens to consider is the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, so you'll have a big max. aperture to play with for portraits.

To get a feel for lens features, recommend reading this guide.

Apart from the crummy image, F8 and no autofocus are 2 things that make it an horrendous idea.

Listen to the lady above.
