Thumbs down Bad PR from Nikon

First of all, i hope this will not generate into Brand vs. Brand discussion...

Now, to the subject: A Facebook post from Nikon did not sounded as the PR that wrote it want it to sound:

Quote:
A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Do any of our facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses? Which is your favorite and what types of situations do you use it for?
More on this here

What do you think?

Yeah, agreed. It's just marketing. I've seen this ad before, but it seems to be going viral now for some strange reason. I have seen 20 or more posts about it in less than a day on FB.

Yeah - though Nikon is generally not great at marketing, though the statement is probably something that the masses will like - as denoted by the huge number of likes the post has...

From my point of view, the number of Likes is not relevant at all... i mean, i've seen ads that presented not so good news (accidents, deaths and so on) and the number of Likes was higher than 0 (zero). Most of the fans just hit the Like just because the post was made by their much loved brand, disregarding the actual content of that post...

Agreed. Especially the ones that are new to photography and think the more expensive their camera equipment the better the photos (as discussed somewhere else in this forum earlier this week). Those are the ones asking you what camera you have, so they can take just as good photos as you are.

Ummmm are you guys forgetting that Nikon is trying to SELL lenses?

How the hell would they make any money if they went around saying that a junky $5 is better than their lenses.....

are you all missing the point of marketing??? Photogs =/= Good marketing people.

The problem is this part of Nikon's original post:

Quote:
A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses
Without this part, the post would be a classical marketing message and no one would be "hurt"

Of course they are trying to sell but their post is not doing this at all

Are you seriously, "hurt" by this... honestly?

Oh really? Reeeaaalllyy?

You posted it... now more people have seen it, they've read the words Nikon and NIKKOR... which are brand names, how many people have seen it in ads, now on FB, now on DPS... and you REALLY think that the ad campaign hasn't worked?

No, not really as i am not a "full-options" photographer...

On the other hand, do you really "reeeaaalllyy" think that they are still in the need to do this kind of subliminal advertising ? If what you say is true and that message was nothing but a marketing strategy, then "chapeau", the manufacturer likes high risks
