Default I want to rant too,....

OK,...so not so much a rant as an I'm kinda frustrated and not sure what I want to do,...

As some of you may remember,...I was (am?) supposed to be training to take the place of a local photogs second shooter. Well, I met with him a couple of times, emailed, etc. He said as soon as I came back from vacay and they started to book more sports stuff, he'd have dude train me. So,..I sent him an email when we got back, and he said that he'd been really busy with Seniors and had hurt his shoulder and had to have surgery. Havent heard anything since. So I called the studio and left a message yesterday. The secretary called me back and left a message saying that the poor guy got the flu after the surgery. So I called her back today, and she said that it wasnt cuz he was ignoring me, it was just that hes been really just,....yeah. All that above. Completely understandable, and I was mainly just kinda checking in. She said though that they havent really had enough business to need a second shooter lately. And that hopefully the football season would pick up. Now,..I REALLY REALLY REALLLLY want to work for this guy. I havent looked for a job anywhere else because I had found what I wanted being a photographer. And he doesnt mind the pink hair, and hes very family oriented. Understands that you dont want to have to sit at the studio away from family editing photos, when you could do it at home. I like the guy and was excited about working with him.

My quandary is that I need a job ASAP. Theres been talk of them sending the soldiers in Iraq home before Thanksgiving, and while I'd be ecstatic to have my husband back, there goes that extra combat zone and family separation pay. An extra $800 a month, no longer there. But if I try applying to big box corporations, theyre going to turn me away as soon as I'd walk into an interview. Wild colored hair is usually against most companies policies, like tattoos and piercings. I cant just bleach it out, and the only color that would cover it up is black. Then I'd just look Goth, and most wouldnt go for that either.

I'm seriously hoping that something good happens soon,...and please,..I dont want to hear any of the "Well, I guess you shouldnt have dyed your hair pink then, huh?" At the time it didnt matter.

End venting frustrations,...I have a few ideas but I'm not sure about them. And No,..I'm not gonna stand on the corner, so Buddha you can just forget it. lol

Maybe its harder to get a job where you are, but I found a lot of people/companies to be quite tolerant of appearances... I never had a problem getting a job even during my multiple facial piercings/purple hair phase... (now its down to one piercing and purple hair) I say embrace the pink hair! If you're capable of doing the job why should the colour of your hair matter?
The worst that could possibly happen is you don't get hired but may as well try in the meantime while you wait for the photographer to get back on his feet.

Contact Centre work usually don't worry about appearance, only voice. Also are you particularly skilled in an area that means that not employing you for a position would be seen as discriminatory? Some organisations are more sensitive that others here and back room jobs where clients don't see you may be available.

The other factor here is that your attitude to your appearance has an impact on how you are perceived. Clearly you are comfortable in your appearance when dealing with the photographer and as such, it is a non-issue for all involved. If you make it an issue for other companies, then they will probably take issue with it. Of course, some will take issue irrespective of what you do - it's their loss!

Good luck and hope you get a job and your husband back safely.

People judge you by the people you hang with, your appearance and what forums you participate in. Goodness me what are you going to do if they find out you're a DPS member?

Seriously, best of luck to to you and your husband!

Sh*t.. Leave your hair pink and just keep on keeping on.. People either want to employ you or they don't.. If they want to employ you, they'll employ you no matter what.

Stop phoning the photographers studio, and go see them face to face.

I would never suggest such a thing! Just because you may be a little phreaky, doesn't mean I don't respect you or look at you differently. I agree with Jon put yourself in front of his face..

I have learned long long long ago to never judge a book by its cover. Mainly because it happens to me all the time. Sadly tho, most people do.
I've done so many of my own lil tests where I'd go into a well to do store with all my tats showing and pulling up on my Harley and watch how poorly they treated me. 2 days later I'd show up in a very expensive suit and all made up and watched how they groveled. Pissed me off and took great pleasure in telling them I'd been in a few days earlier and how they treated me.

Well, there's always that 900 number...j/k

What about applying at all the Wolf Cameras in your area? Or even the photo lab at Costco? Or even Target?

I don't know what part of Texas you're in, but there's a big photo printing lab called BWC in Dallas. Maybe some place like that.

Thanks guys,..I really appreciate the support. Your right,..my skills and personality dont change with my hair color. I just may have to work a lil harder at presenting myself in person as well as on paper.

Windrider- Your story makes me think of the movie Pretty Woman. Where she walks into that store all hooker'd up one day, then a few days later shes wearing designer duds, and they almost fall over at her feet to help her when she walks in. ( Not that your a hooker or anything. )
