Ok this may be going right over my head but seeing the new article on tying your facebook into your photography made me a bit confused.
"For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.” That gives fb the right to use your pictures in anyway they deem fitting right? Does it only correlate to activity involving them? Or more specifically does it give them the right to resell? Are they allowed to remove the watermark?. On the flip side, do you considering worrying about posting your pics on facebook (let's assume that they are watermarked) and having them be stolen to be a bit paranoid? This all comes to mind because my mom recently asked me why I don't have a certain picture I took (of a hummingbird) on facebook . It's only one of two that I am pretty proud of and could only slightly see stolen for uses not authorized by myself. I only have it on my 500px (due to the copyright protection on the site) thinking it's not safe to put it on fb. I guess my question is what do you think lol? Apologies if this is long-winded and confusing. ~Ali

Ah, the old facebook copyright thing. There's a misunderstanding and paranoia by the general public in regards to this issue but really, there's nothing to worry about.
Simply put in regards to what Facebook can do, FB as a site has to have the right to publish your photos that you load on their site, limiting to what you, the user, sets the privacy restrictions on who can see your photos and however you've set your applications on your account. Let's say if you allow everybody to see your photos, then well, you are thereby giving facebook, it's entire website, to allow everybody to see your photos. If you allow third parties to have access to your account (i.e. like when you allow game companies to have access to your account in order to play their games), etc, then you are allowing facebook to have third parties the contents/information on your account, etc. Again, of course, this is all subject to the use outlined in terms and conditions, etc. If you limit your photos for only your friends to see, then that is the limit of what they can do and who to show the photos to. It's all up to you, as the account holder, to limit the use of the content by way of privacy and account settings. So no, facebook cannot sell your photos to other people without your permission. However, in saying that, facebook cannot police people who steal photos from other accounts. That goes to all other sites on the internet. This is why a lot of people post very low resolution photos so that it would restrict printing or publication opportunities on their images. Copyright protected or not, how can you possibly stop people stealing photos you post on any website? That would include 500px, flickr, etc. You can't. Like right now, you wouldn't know if I've stolen a few photos off your flicker account or on this forum, eh? |

I think thats the dichotomy with social media and image sites.
You want them to be a forum where you can present your efforts and share them for people to appreciate and be inspired so like them to be as higher quality res as possible. On the flip side you don't want them to be of such quality that they get plagarised, taken and used without permission etc. Therein lies the dilema |
