Regarding the "derelict locations and trespassing," you might look up some of Izzy's threads. He was into that. I believe it's called urbex photography.
As far as scouting, I also drive around. I will sometimes use Google Earth to get a feel for a place I've heard about but haven't been to yet.

Yep, I generally just drive around.
Occasionally I'll use Virtual Tourist. They have an Off the Beaten Path section usually gives me a place to start. |

London's Lost Rivers - Home locality : online location library Filming, Photo Shoot Location Library | Amazing Space London First couple are "urban" spaces second two are location finders (pretty expensive) Tresspass is civil offence, if you break anything either getting in or whilst in then it is criminal, if not then all they can do is "escort" you from the premises. If possible it is always best to ask for permission - most are pretty cool unless the buildings are dangerous.
