Default A lesson on setting the time on your camera while traveling

A long time ago I learned the hard way that when carrying two bodies you should make sure that the time and date is set exactly the same on both. The reason for this is when you go to process the photos in a program like Lightroom they will show up in the correct order only when you have done that.

Well I just went to Las Vegas, from New Jersey, and learned a similar lesson that hard way about one body across time zones. I started out in Eastern Daylight Time and was taking pictures at the airport and on the plane. Just before landing I changed the time on the camera to Pacific Daylight Time (3 hours difference) in preparation for landing. What I found was pictures were out of order and the shots on the plane were showing about 50 shots into the stream as while they were taken earlier they had a time stamp that was later because of the time change. Thus, probably a good idea to set the camera to the destination time zone before you leave.

Or not change the time zone at all.. That way you're photos are all correct relative to your home, even if it's bit wierd to see photos taken in the middle of the night.

Mind you, the flights I usually take across multitime zones take me longer to fly there than the time difference.. Were you taking photos on the plane?

Yes, that was the issue. I took pictures on the plane and there was a three hour time difference and a five hour flight.

This is why I love ExifTool.

Code:
exiftool "-DateTimeOriginal-=0:0:0 3:0:0" dir
will subtract three hours from the datetime stamp in the EXIF on all the images in dir.

You can time/date shift all the images in a directory this way. The - in front of the = can be either a + or a - to indicate the direction of the shift. The numbers after the = are year:month:day hour:minutes:seconds.

Try flying across the international date line, either way.
