Default GIMP experts out there.... please

I have a program for windows called Paint Shop Pro by JASC. I used to work that program like no tomorrow, could manipulate and do things without having to read tutorials for weeks before performing a simple task as adding a water mark to a photo or removing a light standard.

Now, I'm trying to find the same program for MAC and I really thought GIMP would be the one however, no, I can't seem to make it do anything and I don't want to spend hours and hours reading tutorials that don't help me anyway. I don't need to know the entire program, I just want to fix a photo or two. I want to change the colors of the leaves in one, to yellow, rather than green. And I want to take a dam light standard out of another but I can't make the tools do anything at all.. not one mark on the page so to speak, lol. With PSP, i open the image, add a layer, paint what I want, erase what I want, merge, presto, done! In Gimp, nothing happens.. no matter what I press. I can select any tools I want, change the sizes of the brushes, etc, but when I go to use it, nothing happens. What the hell am I missing here please? Thanks in advance....

Did you select the proper layer to work with? If you're using selective tools, were you seeing some ants? Were you working within the area of selection? When you were done working with the selected area, did you click "select = none"?

I'm not an expert by all means but the above are my usual errors when I try to paint and nothing happens. I don't know what else to add.

Yes, I had added a layer (transparent) to the image. I was trying to spray paint on that layer. Nothing. I even deselected my photo and left the transparent layer up there to spray on, nothing. I then removed the layer, tried to spray on that, nothing. I can select things, but when I want to apply any tool to it, nothing happens. It looks like its going to do something, but it just blinks and stays the same. I don't understand...

I got GIMP running to see what else that might give me such problems. The only things I could come up with are opacity and/or scale of the brushes. Other than that, probably a re-install (I never encountered a "blink").

I hope the other GIMP users could see this post soon.

Just post the picture you want to fix, explaining what it needs done. Some people here might try to do something.

Gimp works fine on my Mac. I wonder if it might be worth trying to follow a simple tutorial or two? If you pay attention to the details, you should be a step closer to knowing whether you have downloaded a defective version? Or you could try creating a new image and painting on it with the paintbrush tool, to see what happens.

Advanced image editing software can be pretty complex, so spend a few minutes at the very simple end of things before you try to launch into trying to edit a photo.

Default Basic tutorial to hide your lamp post

Open the Jpeg
Layer-> New Layer (Transparent)
Select the Jpeg layer
Select the Clone tool (looks like a rubber stamp)
Ctrl-Click on the area to be copied
Select the transparent layer
Click and drag to 'paint' with the Clone tool

Now you should be able to toggle the visibility of your New layer to hide/show the lamp-post.
