Default Fed up with lightroom presets.

Every time I create a new catalogue in Lightroom, it goes back to how it was, using the prsets such as "Brightness 50" and "Contrast 25", sharpness, noise reduction etc.. I know how to change the presets so that each new import into that catalogue uses presets that I want (which is "Don't change anything, wait for me to decide) but I create a new catalogue for each month, and have 3 computers that I work on (two PC's and a Mac)and I'd quite like to permenantly change the way Lightroom handles new catalogue settings.

Does anyone know if there's a config file or a registry setting that I can alter to make sure that the new catalogues atomagically generate the settings I'm after, rather than the presets defined by Adobe?

Sorry, I don't have an answer to the question. But out of curiosity, why in the world do you do this?

If I read this correctly, you're happy with making your own presets and setting that to take effect when you import. But you want to alter the "default" import settings?

If so, Lightroom hasn't actually applied "25" Contrast and "50 Brightness", it's just using them as the starting markers, the 0 points as it were. Rather than having -50 to 0 to +50, it's just going 0-100 and putting the 0 point in the middle. So a photo imported with no custom presets applied will be exactly how it is out of the camera.

I'll say it because you would to me.

First it was hating on auto now it is hating on presets. I think you are just whining. I have none of these issues that you do. Maybe you should buy a book on the software and learn how to use it.

I'd strongly recommend creating folders inside one catalog, rather than monthly catalogs. One of the strengths of LR is its databasing, which you can't use if your photos are all spread out like that. Chronological makes some bit of sense in a high-level way, but when it comes down to content, photos you shot on Wednesday probably have nothing to do with photos from Saturday.

As far as the presets ... there's not really anything you can do beyond changing the import presets.

Ahhh.. The old Izzy's back.. What a shame.. You were actually quite pleasent there for a short while. Never mind, personality transplants never last, hope you didn't spend too much on it.

The whole point about being able to ask questions on here is to find out if someone knows anything useful, obviously you don't, so as usual you post something to get a rise out of someone instead.. Sorry. FAILed at that too.. Have a nice day..

While I agree with you, the reason I make smaller catalogues on a monthly basis is really one of convenience.. I spend 2 hours a day on the train, and with my laptop, I can work on the photos through an external hard disk there, and then plug it in at work and work on them when nobody's looking, and also when I have a few moments at home.. I don't want to carry around my entire picture library, and monthly is just a convenient way to break it down, so that's what I do. Using folders inside Lightroom means I need to carry around the whole catalogue for all the changes for all the photos, which means that if I ever lost the disk, even if the photos were stored on a different disk, the changes would be lost.

But thanks for answering the question.

So are you saying that my photos are as bright as they are after importing into LR? And LR just uses the number 50 rather than actually adjusting the brightness to the photo that you see in the loop? When I look at the histogram in my camera and the one in Lightroom, the one in LR is pushed tot he right.. I know LR is non-destructive, but the reason I want to set the default for new catalogues is simply because I want to see the image SOOC, so the histograms match, not as the developers of LR think I ought to see it which usually ends up pushing the bright parts of the image to far to the right and I get washed out highlights.

So I guess I'll just have to reset the default import settings when I create a catalogue.. That's annoying.. Shame too, since there's probably an XML type file somewhere that contains all these precious things.
