Default potential sorta big purchase

looks like for the price the Canon EOS D5 Mark II and Nikon D700 are similar, well full frame anyway...there are differences in the two cameras (that's consistent through all the models it seems)...i need to rent or borrow each and decide....this decision matters because the next model upgrade from either manufacturer is even more pricey...i'll make the decision on the feel of the camera just wondered if anyone had either and how they liked them....mainly used for architecture and editorial work....output websites and print

Also check to see what lenses are available, in both systems, to meet your needs.

Suggest that you delay your descision for a month or so.. Nikon have been promising us an upgrade for the D700 for several months now, delayed because of the Tsunami.. But by all accounts, the D800 is going to be a 18-24 MPix FX.

However, if I were you, I'd look at getting a D7000 and spending more money on the lenses.. By my reconing, with the way technology changes these days, the camera body you buy today will be out of date in 3 or 4 years time.. Your lens should be good to you for perhaps double that.. In addition, they lose money slower, so the resale value of a 3 or 4 year old lens is a much higher percentage of the new value than with a camera body.. Also, if you wiat, the resale value of the D700 will drop signigicantly when the D800 is released, so you could get an FX body at DX prices.

What people also say is that it's the quality of the glass that creates the quality of the image..

Just my 2 centimes worth, take it or leave it, I don't care.

thanks for reply, it gets to exactly what i'm wondering...i like the D7000 but its DX and small...i have big hands the camera feels dainty to me i feel like i keep the whole thing on my fingertips....i'm trying to avoid a bunch of criticisms of cameras that seem to technical (the important thing is getting the shot and not splitting hairs over more than high enough resolution vs. really, really more than high enough resolution (i just sent tiffs off to have a book made at adorama and was surprised how big the raw files were (clients i speak to bitch because photographers shoot their buildings and give them a thumb drive that takes them forever to open or lots of space to store) but i do think the FX is important (5D mark II in cannon)...that way i dont have to shed lenses and can just start buying lenses and attachments i can keep for a long time....i may wait and use the next few months to rent a variety of equipment and study up on the D700 replacement and see if anything is around the corner from canon...its never apples to apples with these model (both very good) its like one model will have features the other omits or omits features the other one has...i'm just gonna have to pick and get on down the road and work

thanks

along those same lines (model upgrade), how does it play out....if a D800 comes out is it at a similar price point as D700 it would replace and the D700 becomes obsolete and much cheaper?...if i was earning with it now these price issues would be nickle and dime but i'm not yet so i have to be careful

Just to address your "Dainty" Point.. I have the MB-D11 Battery pack attached.. It makes the camera a similar size to the FX cameras, and allows the camera to be used in portrait mode. I gave it a good test a couple of weeks ago at a wedding, and it's basically the same size as a D3x that the main photog was using, and the photo quality was excellent.

I'm waiting for the D800, but to be honest, if/when I eventually get it, I'll keep my D7000 also.

I bought a D7000 while I wait for the D4 (I killed my D3).
Nice camera, but not in love with it. I definitely prefer the handling of the pro bodies. I've added a battery grip and it "helps", but it's still not the same. And I don't like the play in the battery pack mounting (I like to use the Spider holster system).

Honestly, between the models it will depend on handling/logic (menus vs controls etc) and lenses for your specific needs.

You don't mention what you are used to using or what the primary use will be so I can't be of much more help.

i have recently (past few months) started using a camera my wife bought me D3100...i use to shoot film Canon AE-1 and Mamiya C-33 back when i was in college 20 years ago...12-15 years ago all my stuff was stolen i was working allot and photography was just something i quit doing....we had a little cheap ass point and shoot we would carry around...i've enjoyed this camera and photographing again....been trying different bodies, lenses will have some artist portraits published (coffee table book) in a month or so and have interest from some guys in architecture to shoot their stuff (not allot of cash for photo budgets these days)...one add agency wants to use me for a few days....i've revived some old friendships with professional photographers and i've been quizzing them on things....trying to get handle on allot of things quickly...(lenses, lights, fees, contracts etc.) there is more serious equipment out there that i need i have to feel comfortable before i start cutting the big ass checks
