Default A good and afordable 23'' IPS monitor

I've just came across a monitor review in one Serbian photography magazine, and they say it's really good but pretty cheap ... so if someone is looking for an IPS monitor, maybe it's worth checking out:

LG Flatron IPS231p

23 inch IPS-LCD panel
LED backlight
1.920 x 1.080 pix resolution
5.000.000 : 1 dynamic contrast
6 ms response time
250 cd/m2
1780 degrees viewing angle
VGA/DVI/Audio connections
2x 1W speakers
Adjustable: Height, angle and vertical rotation

Its price seems to be around 220 USD

Note that this is only a 6 bit panel screen and uses dithering to approximate 8 bit colors. You will have the nice even viewing angle but you will not have accurate colors.

Also, if the 6-bit thing is true, yeah, pay a little extra to get the more accurate color definitely.

Where do you see that? Is that a function of IPS vs. S-IPS vs. P-IPS, etc., or do you just know that about this monitor? I couldn't find anything in the specs that referenced 6-bit vs. 8-bit.

I'm not looking to buy a monitor right now, but the next time I buy, I want to make sure I get one that'll be decent for photos.

Typically, and for good reason on their part, that often isn't disclosed. Just google the monitor you are looking for + 6 bit. This will often bring up monitor reviews showing such information.

Here's a fairly detailed review of this monitor. About halfway down, in the "Colour Accuracy, Black Depth and Contrast" section, they talk about the 6 bit panel used.

Thought this might be of interest:

6Bit vs 8Bit

The last paragraph particularly, since it refers to the colour depth in the monitor in Milosh's initial post

In terms of colour accuracy and colour reproduction, the use of 6-Bit + FRC doesn't make a massive difference. Modern TN Film panels for instance can offer very good colour reproduction qualities and DeltaE can be very low on colour calibration graphs. To the average user, colours still look very good and it might well be very hard to tell any real difference between a 6-Bit and an 8-Bit screen.

"For that average user" -- that means someone who uses their computer for email and web surfing -- not a professional photographer who relies on color accuracy for their work.
