I don't know about damaging the camera sensor, but you can definitelydamage your eyes ie: welder's flash

Welders flash.. Like having you eyes rubbed with sandpaper.. Not nice.

Here's a quick natural recipe for relieving stress from your eyes (from starring at the screen too much, or from welder's flash): take a fresh potato and cut it into 4-5 mm thick slices, then place one over each eye. You'll feel the potato drawing out something from your eyes, and it will help you. After 10 minutes or so, you'll feel the effect weakening and you should put new slices on your eyes. It's a weird thing.
And yeah, this is so photography related.

make sure you set your exposure for the ambient light comming off the metal and not the hot light from the welder. try a 1/2 or 1 second shutter speed for a cool effect.
