Default LOVELY new camera!

Spent a bit more time with it. I'm not in love with it, but I knew that would be the case before I ever bought it. There's things it will never do quite as well, particularly the focus is slowish and hunts a little compared to the D3. Frame rate is a little slow, but not bad.

But what I'm starting to LOVE about this thing is simply the 16MP Crop. With my 70-200 f/2.8 w/ the 2xTC III and the crop factor I have essentially a 600mm f/5.6 with 16MP on image and I'm guessing it weighs less than 5#.
What's more, I end up with essentially the same MP/FOV as I had with my D3 and 300-800mm f/5.6.... That weighs almost 20#.

If I can ever get fully accustomed to it, and it doesn't "conflict" to badly with whatever I end up getting later, I'll probably just have to keep it.

Besides, it can get the job done quite nicely.

D7000 w/ 70-200 + 2x

Nice capture, just think of it as your back up till your new toy comes along. I grew up in and around Doylestown, if your familiar with that area. Its outside of philadelphia. Just took my son to visit my family back in June. I miss having 4 real seasons instead of rain and more rain

Steve, you'll get used to it...it just takes old dogs like us longer than it would for a 15 year old. Did you ever see them text message...they can type and send two paragraphs faster than you and I can hit the speed dial button. And BTW, you did get some nice shots with it

Inksta,
I knew that...I almost purchased a D2xs instead....I'm kind of hoping the D4 will be a crop sensor

Problem is I don't want to really get used to it....
I WILL be getting the D4 or maybe the D3x (if prices plummet and the D4 doesn't suit)....This is such a different animal that switching between would likely never be "easy".

BTW, thanks for the compliment...just goes to show it's not just the gear

I've been to Doylestown...but can't remember why.. Seattle huh, at least you have the space needle and beaches. That would probably suit me well for birds.... I could do without winter since I don't ski anymore.

You may want to get used to it after all.
The ability to switch instantly between 2 cameras with different lenses on is invaluable. Maybe an 105mm prime on one an a long tele on the other.
Don't forget that to save time is to save shots.

I don't get it. I shoot primarily D3S bodies, with a D3 back up, but I also have a D700 and I don't find switching between them all that coutner-intuitive. The D7000 is a totally different animal, but it's also in a totally different class.

Nice shot. I love my D700 but my carry around general purpose camera is my D5000 for many of the same reasons. The controls are very different, but you get used to it. It is somewhat a pain to have to go to menus for certain items that the higher end bodies have dedicated controls for, but you learn to accept that. For birding a crop body with high MP is probably the better way to go anyway.
