I considered it when I started out in photography a year ago, but when I saw the prices many were asking, I said .... ahhh.... No... LoLz... When I know I'm ready to spend on advertising and have a budget for that, I would join these institutions because thats what they are... a place to advertise and possibly network which is also known as advertising in some sorts. And the bigger organization the more money they ask for, which is understandable, just I don't even have an advertising budget yet as I just started offering my services just a few weeks ago.

The future is pretty bleak these days in photography for pros with everyone with a camera wanting to be one. However, there's the National Press Photographers Association, PPA, ASMP and others. But they don't grant you access into concerts, rallies, or such. Mostly, you have to be a working member of the press to gain entry.
However, the ASMP and PPA do have programs that will help you learn about the business aspects of photography. So will books.........Professional business practices for photographers and professional business practices in photography. You do , however, are issued press card with ASMP, but it's expensive to join. I believe there's a portfolio viewing fee and you have to get three recommendations from members. Also, the annual dues is about $375.00 per year, but the benefits and knowledge gained is invaluable. ASMP has been around since the 1940's and is one of the best photo organizations. Find a chapter nearby and attend some meetings and workshops. If you join as an associate member it's cheaper, but you can only be one for a few years before requiring to step up to general membership. As for internationally...........gaining access to overseas events at times is a real nightmare, unless you have proper "Media" creds. Then again, I've gained access with my ASMP card. Depends on what country you're in. Japan is pretty tight with their requirements.
