Default My copyright?

I was at Walmart couple of days ago. I had some photos printed into a wallet size. After carefully looking at the pictures that I’ve printed, the lady asked if I had the copyright to the photos. I said yes. Then she asked if she could see it. Has this ever happened to you? How did you show that you have the copyright to the photos that you just printed?

Well, at that point, you can just tell her no. Really, she should have asked you for that PRIOR to reproduction. At my last job, I did have to turn away a few customers wanting photo prints who quite likely DID own the copyright. Policy there was to just not print anything that appeared to be shot by a studio or professional photographer unless they had a signed copyright release form. Realistically, it doesn't prove you own the copyright, but from what I understand, having the signed release form on file would place the blame on the customer, not us, if it turned out they did not have reproduction permission.

This. You could have just asked her for the release form they undoubtedly should have available, if they're croaking about copyright.

Alternatively, I believe most cameras can now embed your own copyright info in the image's EXIF upon creation of the image. You could just have her open he file and look at it in that case.

I know the D3100 for sure allows comments to be embedded. Alternatively, you can set lightroom to embed *copyright symbol* yourname, or whatever, on import

Walmart has a form in store you can sign. It's just a CYA thing. If walmart ever gets sued because of copyrights, they can pull out the form and say "see, they claimed they owned it". If you're sick of the hassle go somewhere else. Our CVS prints anything. A friend of mine had them make copies of his kid's school photo. The employee even zoomed in and cropped out the "olan mills" logo for him.

I have had this happen many times early on. Not so much anymore because they know me by first name there when I need to use them.

What a compliment

I would ask the person what she needs or expects to see.. I mean, I go out with my camera, I take a photograph, I print it. At no point have I created or printed any documents in relation to copyright. How can I prove it? About the only way is to show the RAW files.

It would be hard to believe if any or many walmarts or CVS's have clerks with the knowledge of what RAW means... heck even most Models don't know what it really means.

Yes, most digital camera will embed the copyright information into the EXIF data but most of the Wal-Mart employee will just give you a blank stare.

this is something that Wal-Mart does depending on the manager. If the photo look too good for an amateur, then they assume a professional took it and ask for copyright or license release. If you do not have one, they have a liability release form that you can fill out.

Yup...it means they're to be photographed in the raw, right?
