Default Best ND filter

I would like to purchase an nd filter, but not sure which one is the best for what I want it for (long exposure of waterfall, clouds, ect). I've been debating between B+W ND 1.8 or B+W ND.9. I'm not sure if the 1.8 would be too many stops? Any input or other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

Depends on when you want to take pictures. I have a ND3.0 (10 stops) but it still only gives me 30s during the middle of the day. That being said, in twilight or anything darker, I get shutter speeds in the 15-20 minute range, easy.

It would be used more during the day and maybe around sunset. I've read to take these types of photos on an overcast day.

If you can afford it, this one...

Singh-Ray Filters: Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter

Buy it and you will never have to buy another one and you will only have to carry one with you into the field.

I have the nd1.8 from B&W, it's damn good, I use it all the time. Took this with it..

that is expensive! But I guess it cuts that amount if filters you need.

This is exactly what I had in mind, I checked the Exif info out and looks like the exposure time was 15 sec? Was it a cloudy day? I think this is the one I will go with, I've read the reviews on it and all good things and it's more in my price range than Singh Ray. Thanks everyone who replied

Yes, it was, but I've had decent shots like that off 8 secs.. I've got a nd3.0 too, but I never use it, I need bright sun and even then I get a strong colour cast.. This one sorts itself out with just a temperature change in Lightroom.

I'd love to go Singh Ray, or Lee, but they're soooo expensive..

Just one tip, if you decide to use a polarising filter as well, ( to get another stop) screw the polarising filter into the camera and this into the CPL.. I did it the other way round once, and found the CPL had no grip ridges on the bit that mattered and I couldn't separate the two.
