Default What's your shutter count

Ok.. Apart from being a chatterbox on here, I realised today that I take far too many photos.. Or do I?

My brand new D7000 that I bought 10th March is, today 5 months old.. For it's birthday, I thought I'd see how many photos I'd taken.. I was a bit shocked to discover that I'll probably pass the 12,000 mark tomorrow..

That's an average of 2400 a month
545 a week
78 a day
3 an hour
Or about one photo every 20 minutes, 24 hours a day, every day..

Imagine if that was really the case, and I took a photo every 20 mins.. Actually don't, scub that thought.. Some of the things I do I'd prefer to do in private, thanks!!

Ok, what's your shutter count and what's your average?

Canon 350D purchased 2006 - approx 60,000
Canon 40D purchased 2007 - Approx 130,000
Canon 5D purchased 2008 - estimated 10,000
Canon G11 P&S purchased 2009 - estimated 2000

How much do I shoot?
Vacation approx 100/day average so for a 6 week vacation 4200 photographs.
Some days (like travelling days) it will be next to nothing other days probably around 200
Early morning sunrise shoot etc - 50-60.
Early morning birding (including birds in flight) approx 300. Same for a classical music concet if I am the official photographer.
Trackside at motor racing events (with a media pass) approx 2000 per day if the action is intense, and some events run for 3 days. For motor cycles it is more.

Does the camera keep track of how many times you have clicked the shutter? If the answer is yes, Where can I find that information? I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm technologically challenged-- to put it mildly.

Well I've got and have had a few bodies in the last four years so it is hard to get a good count. I had a D40, D80 and D90 but they are all gone. I think I put about 30,000 on the D40 but have no recollection of the D80 and the D90 was about 15,000 before it went to dad.

My current bodies are as follows: D700 about 4,000, D300 about 24,000 and D5000 about 14,000.

For some cameras you can use software, not normally supplied when you purchase a camera, to read the shutter count.

I don't reset the file name/counter on my cameras. I just look at the image numbers on the files.

The only thing you need to do is keep track of every time it goes past 9999 and starts again.

I guess I'm the slacker here. My DSLR is two years old and my image numbers are around 2100! So Jon, you take more in a month than I have taken in 2 years!

I'm going on a 2 week trip to Zion, Bryce, Arches and Canyonlands NPs, so my count will increase a lot soon!

Nikons number the image files sequentially. You can choose (somewhere deep in the menus) whether the numbering resets or not when you change or reformat the card.

I shudder to think of how many photos I've shot since going digital in 2006. With my KM7D, it was close to 10K before it died this year. Then we added a Canon P&S, the Nikon D200, & the D7000. I would say, I have a good sized collection of photographs. I've been working on culling ones that are subpar (to my eye) or worse. No point in keeping stuff I don't like. Maybe it's good that I can't see an exact count!

I think I have about
13K on the T2i and that is 6 months old
and 11K on the XS and that is a year old

This is based on estimated file numbers and how many times I have seen the numbers roll over.

30,750 on my D90 that I bought in October 2008. More than half of those were taken in the first year. Life has interfered a bit since then.
