Does anyone know this term high-pass (having something to do with photoshop.).. ?? Can someone tell me what it is or what it does or how to use it and when?? Thanks!! (I heard this term while listening to an interview with a fashion photographer)

yes, you'll find it under Filter>Other>High Pass. Why do you ask?...Might help if I read the rest of your post. It's another method of sharpening, or spot sharpening. I also use it in the inverse mode for blurring and skin softening. I always create a new layer first before I use it which will give me the opportunity to change the opacity

LOL!! I read that and was thinking,....High Pass? Is that like a Hall Pass for getting high? lol,... You'll have to excuse me, those tokin days were only about 12 years ago. ( Yes, that means I was 15, if you happen to look at my profile for my age. )

Here's how I use it: (for selctive sharpening)
1) Control J to make new layer
2) Go to Filter>Other>High Pass. The image will get all grey and funky looking. I set the radius between 6 and 25...it will vary with each image
3) In the layers palette change from Normal to Overlay
4) Hold the Alt key and click on the little mask icon on the bottom of the layers palette. The image will revert to it's previous setting
5) Select a soft white brush and paint over the area you want to sharpen. (like the eyes) Finish by adjusting the opacity slider for the amount you want
6) Flatten layer

For selective softening:
1) Follow step 1-3 above
2) Click Ctrl I to invert sharpening to blurring
3) Continue with steps 4-6 above

Are you sure Elements 8 doesn't have it? You may want to check again, as Elements 9 does.
