My grandmother, who gave me my first camera at 8, recently passed away. There are thousands of here slides left in her darkroom and I was wondering what the best way to go about digitizing them is. I heard of a company called ScanCafe that is realtively cheap ($0.22/slide) and insures your pics for $1,000 but I'd rather have the pics than the money. Are there any decent 35mm slide scanners on the market that won't break the budget? I searched the forum and didn't see any answers on it.
Thanks for any help

A bellows/ tube type slide duplicator should be available for not a lot of money.
Possibly "better" than scanning (but I don't know).

Just shot a bunch of my dads old Korean war slides HERE using a Nikon D700 (for the full frame) and PB-4 bellows, PS-4 slide copy attachment and a nikon 55mm micro lens..
Scancafe would have been a lot cheaper if I'd have had to buy the gear. I had it so I just set up the camera/bellows and shot the slides that appealed to me.

An Epson V500 isnt that expensive, but it *is* slow. Hell, you could even buy a Nikon Coolscan, do them relatively quickly, then sell the scanner on the used market.
