Default looking at architectural photography....

i'm getting use to equipment used in shooting architectural photography and speaking to firms about doing work....i've gotten peeks of proposals from top of the food chain types of photographers that work nationally ( i am bottom of food chain and i'm fine with that for the time being )

my question is....what in the hell takes a 30+ meg image? and when photographers charge for "photo capture" i'm assuming they just mean shooting/downloading (maybe manipulating)...?

Hasselblad Medium format cameras. I think the highest resolution one is 55mp. Plus these cameras have a "multi shot" system feature that allows them to capture details that would escape normal DSLR's.

They make the highest end DSLR look like a toy cam. Last I checked they are about $15K to start on a generation back. The latest and greatest is about $55K

Even renting a digital Hassie will set you back financially. Not as much as all out purchasing one though. I suppose by the time you bought a few lenses plus the body, you'd be looking at close to $100K. Unless I win a major lottery, I'll never be able to afford such a luxury. But then the prints that can be made from a medium format are huge...the details are amazing.

Luckily for me & my hubby/bank account, I'm pretty content with my current system. LOL

yea, i realize i'm limited in equipment for starters and will have to rent larger body i think (D3100 presently) and i will have to rent for a while (lenses too) and absorb some of that cost...that will be interesting to see/compare that they blow bigger badder slrs away like mine...but at what point does in matter? some architects i spoke to hate getting photos because they are so big....yea no lottery and no big run at the world series of poker so i'll just limp along, gonna look into hassie's thought (such good film cameras) now i'm curious

You don't have to go with a Hasselblad or similarly (relatively) overpriced digital MF or digital back for a MF outfit..

This was released within the last year.

Yeah, nice.. But it's not the same as peering into the top of a Hasselblad now is it?

Well, I haven't compared the IQ from them, but given it's about $10k less that a 40MP HB, without even factoring in the cost of glass (given the Pentax is backward-compatible with legacy lenses), it certainly makes digital MF shooting more accessible.

seriously, put the magazines down and start making a business plan. You can shoot architectural gigs with a dslr. Probably gonna want to dump that 3100 and go to full frame. You're in the shallow end of the pool if you want real feedback on medium format and large format digital systems.
