Angry Well, $h1T!! I got the D3 back today

Along with a nice note telling me it's "beyond economical repair". WTF?! Isn't that up to me?
No revised quote or anything....just a paper weight in a bag. They didn't even return the original packing I sent it in.

I'm not very happy right now.

I thought you recently posted that they repaired it for $500?

What happened to it Steve..was it just "old age problems?"...or did it get damaged some way?

You can *still* send it to me. It'll make a nice art piece for my office

That's what they told me, they were going to "replace insides". So I anxiously waited for it to arrive today. Then I read the note...."We initially indicated we would be able to service your product. Unfortunately...."

If you can "replace the insides" for $500 how does it suddenly become uneconomical to repair? What's left to replace? And why not give me an updated estimate? Economical to who? @#!!$%&!!@#

Yes, it was out of warranty, yes warranty doesn't cover dropping it in a river, but WTF?!
I think maybe they didn't have the parts needed and wouldn't be able to get them anytime soon due to the nuclear incident. Easier to brush me off....

Damn glad it was insured.
Back to no DSLR until at least the D4 announcement.

Anyone have any experience taking a camera apart? I have pretty decent electronics skills.

Nah, I'll probably operate on it out of curiosity or sell it for parts.

I've taken my D70 apart. The hardest thing about it was the flip catches on the ribbon circuits. They are hard not to break. If it's anywhere like mine, the sensor, and the processor come out all together when you pull the back off. You won't have that giant capacitor to worry about with it, I don't think, since it doesn't have a flash? That was the scariest part of it for me.

Yeah, no flash.
I'm guessing it's all surface mount components? I don't really have the tools/skills for those. I'm certain I have a diode or resistor fried at the least.
