It does look good for displaying pics.

I'm there now, however only two pics so far.

I was reading their "scoring" system.. turns out that the numbers I got for voting on my photos yesterday are now worth less.. There's a big incentive to keep putting up new photos if you care about that kind of thing.. Personally I quite like it cos it's kinda subliminal encouragement to keep posting decent photos and keep my portfolio turning over.

Oh! So that's why. I was wondering why my Ashley photo was down to an 80 or so from the mid-90s even though it still kept getting Favorite'd. I just assumed more people were downvoting it.

Interesting mechanic. I like it.

It's very complicated, but one of the creators explains it here:

Good read! That explains it well! As for the dislikes, I wish they would make people explain every dislike they make, instead of giving a certain number beforehand. I want to grow, and would hope people would use it if they don't like any of mine.

Are you guys uploading full size images? I can see why you would want to upload the full size image if someone wants to buy a print. I see they have disabled the right-clicking, but someone can still take a screen capture. Are you guys concerned with security? I see Luke seems to be the only one with watermarked images and I was wondering why others do not watermark their shots (because they want to sell the non-watermarked images?).

Edit - Ok, I see this reply from SwissJon to sk66 in another thread. I didn't know about the 900px resizing:

"The layout is just a standard template.. The categories are created in a similar way to Flickr, they call them collections, I couldn't see any limits on the size, their server resizes the previews to 900px because that prevents people from downloading something of a useable size, there's options to download the full file at a cost dictated by you on fotomoto.. I don't know how well that will work, but since I'm not intending to .. The max size is 30mb per picture, and with a standard account you're limited to uploading a maximum of 20 photos a week."

I have always found watermarks to be fundamentally useless and do more harm than good, honestly. Either they obscure and ruin the image, or they're in an unobtrusive corner that can easily be remedied with a quick content fill.

The only real way to protect your work is with digital watermarks. I had been planning on getting a Digimarc Pro account for a while, but with the volume of images I bulk-upload to Flickr it was too expensive. Now that I'm starting to eschew the "dump it all" flickr philosophy for the "best of the best" 500px philosophy, however, I think I'll be opening a Pro account after my next payday.

I really like the layout of this site and the inspiration it provides. Thank you DPS for showing this site off. I joined and put my modest landscape portfolio online - the square crop unfortunately doesn't help the panoramas get viewed, but perhaps in time. I quite like the easy portfolio creation by collection as well - nice.
