Default 3D Modeling

I hardly have time to do anything photography related besides taking pictures of my son these days. I dabbled with 3d modeling about 10 years ago and now I find myself going back to it. It's more convenient for me now when my son goes to bed at night since I can spend an hour or two modeling with out having to go to some place to take pictures or setup a studio in the apartment only to have to tear it down again before I go to bed so the baby boy won't destroy everything.

Does anyone else out there do 3D Modeling? I've been thinking about mixing 3D graphics with photography to create surreal images.

I tried a little, with Maya 7. It has a steep learning curve and is something I just didn't have time to devote to, along with all my other interests. I like drawing as well, and would love to learn digital painting or something as well, but wouldnt know where to start...

Used to use Rhinoceros back in the day. Still have a copy lying around somewhere. I could probably still get back into it if needed.

I used to do 3rd-party work for some video game modification packages, and thats how I got started, but I eventually got into some higher-res stuff. Nowhere near a pro, but decent. Needed a better rendering package, but wanting to keep it free...

Blender is pretty good from what I hear and it's free. I haven't given it a shot yet. I think my first project will be to make a model of a saddle and some reins that I can photoshop onto my dog then add Jack onto the saddle.

I did in the past, for fun ..... mainly making stuff for Poser in Cinema 4D.
Finally realised I was spending far too much time in front of the computer creating imaginary worlds and was better off getting out into the real world enjoying life, and got back into photography..

Some examples.
