Default Lens or Flash

My brother is gonna have a something-like-prom during December this year and he offered i go photograph the event. It will be in a park at night with those lights you hang on christmas trees.

So my question is whether i should buy a flash or a 50mm f1.8 first.

Flash unless you want to shoot at ISO3200. The fastest glass in the world can not make light where there is none.

People will point and giggle

I have never tried them, supposedly they work well with TTL etc, I have heard if you upgrade bodies, sometimes off brand flashes are not compatible with the new body, where Nikon/Canon make sure their products talk. They are really only $100 less, I would probably not buy a coffee every day and just buy a brand name a month down the road.

Actually here is a quote from another forum from someone who owned both:

Whilst the Nissin can produce good enough results, especially if coupled with a suitable reflector, you will find that it can "misbehave" most unexpectedly when you're depending upon its TTL abilities. Unit to unit variance amongst the Nissin flashes is much wider than with Nikon flashes, due to an obviously lower level of quality control. With age, simple things which might bother the Nikon user after several years of use become an irritating problem very much earlier on with the Nissin - an example is the quality of the hot-shoe build and material itself, which "ages" and can produce unreliable contact much earlier than it would on the Nikon unit. If none of that matters to you, then getting the Nissin will save you a lot of cash, of course.

Now that has been replaced by the SB-700, which has even more features and is only 100 bucks more than the Nissin

Depends on what other lighting they'll have. They'll have to have some other spots. If you're gonna use flash, I'd recommend an assisitant with the flash on a pole in a small softbox so you can use it as your own little spot.

If youre on a limited budget, then you'll probably be able to pick up a second hand sb800 for the price of a new di622ii.
