Assuming that "manual" means the same as "non-CPU", then Nikon says you should shoot in "M": link

That's what I do with my D90.

Without any contacts on the lens to talk with the computer in the camera, the camera won't know things such as your aperture setting.

I don't know about tilt shift with an extension. Sorry.

Wut?

Are you saying the knobs on the tilt-shift lens you bought hits the housing for the viewfinder/flash? if so, then an extension wont help: it's a limitation of the design. The housing on dSLRs extends further forward than old film SLRs.

in terms of the focus of the wide angle (even though there was a focus ring ) it did also auto fucus, i used both....i was confused at first though

the tilt shif did just barely catch the housing of the D3100 (@#$%, wouldn't go up all the way) i called the rental place (lens rental and they did a great job answering questions and supplying lenses) and they hadn't even been asked that before so i hobbled along best i could...there is alot to get use to with the tilt shift (zooming in for focus helped) once i got use to it i could see fine through viewfinder...had a screw up with tripod friend lent me, spent first two days using hand held (doable but not easy)...tilt shift was a 24 and a great lens was surprised it didn't push subject back anymore than it did

came to the conclusion that until i can move up in bodies i will have to shoot this lens upside down when height adjustment is critical
