Unhappy Nikon D3000

I have the Nikon D3000 and I am not sure what setting I need to use for taking pictures of waterfalls, hummingbirds etc. I have changed the shutter speed and it helped but would like any suggestions to help

Welcome to DPS.
That depends on what you want: If you want to freeze the water, you need a fast shutter speed. If you want to give it a smooth, dreamy kind of look, you need to use a slow shutter speed. Just whatever you do, don't forget to compensate with aperture.

Hummingbirds will need a very fast shutter speed, and/or flash, to freeze the wings.
