Default Bulb Exposing

Hello gang!

Recently I was walking around downtown Ft. Worth Texas at night looking for something interesting. I happened upon two photographers attempting to capture their assignment using long shutter times. The set up was a store display of a Rolex watch face projected onto the sidewalk. The projected image was obviously brighter where the projection distancw was shorter and progeressively dimmed to the "top" of the projection.

The photographer was attempting to capture the watch face with a lady in red high heels walking around and stopping 90 degrees around the projection. He wanted to capture her individual footsteps in motion and the shoes not in motion. He was having great difficulty in lighting the feet in motion. He had a buddy moving a low powered pen light from the feet up to the calf to add light. My best guess is he was exposing for about 20 seconds. Peeping at his display I have to guess he was underexposing on purpose to compensate for the long shutter time. I hung around for 4-5 of his attempts and pressed on. He never got what he wanted while I was there. Any suggestions as to how to have made this good idea work better?

By the way, I did get a shot of the lady walking, but the light guy stepped into the field of view and ruined my attempt. So much for trying to steal a guys idea.

Perhaps bulb mode with an off camera flash aimed only at her feet, careful not to wash out projection, fired manually.

Walk, flash, walk, flash, repeat.
