Default I yelled NO!

I don't know if this has happened to any of you, but this is another "learn" thread. I recently purchased a rather expensive notebook computer and have just set it up on my desk with a 22" desktop montitor hooked up to it.

This morning I did what I usually do when I first sit down at my desk, I placed the steaming hot mug of coffee on my coaster just to the left of the computer.

And by now you probably guessed what happened - I yelled NO! Which for me was fairly unusual - in these type of situations I would mostly use much stronger language.

It splashed all over my desk, onto my notebook monitor, the desktop monitor and across the top part of the notebook missing all the keys and any holes that would let the liquid drip inside.

I was so darn lucky, but let that be a lesson to me!

Lucky you. I always have my morning coffee while checking my email. I guess I need to be extra careful.

I can guarantee (and my wife can attest to it) that NO is not what I would have yelled. I probably would have made a sailor blush.

This puts me in mind of a story I was told by a Burroughs field engineer back in the days I was programming "big iron". He was called in to a customer location to get the system back on line after an operator spilled a cup of chicken noodle soup on the console keyboard. He said that even after taking the keyboard apart, he still spend the better part of three hours with tweezers picking noodles out of the nooks and crannies before it was again operable.

That's why I like a pc. I spilled something in my keyboard once. I threw it out and bought a new one for around twenty bucks. Can't do that with a notebook. Plus, I can rest my feet on my pc and it keeps them toasty in the winter.

As you know Bruce, I tend to also check in here with my coffee!! I'm so glad you didn't really screw something up.

I can say this as it sounds like I have pretty much the same set up. My notebook is waaaaaaay to the left of my desk, tucked back under a free standing shelf that holds my printer. Then I have a cordless keyboard and flatscreen monitor sitting more central. I figure the one thing I really don't want to fry with a stunt like yours is the laptop so it's quite well hidden out of the way! You can tell your pc to "do nothing" when you shut the lid-- and all I have to do is come along and touch my mouse to wake it up. My laptop lid really is never even open.

Once I get PS CS5 on my notebook, I'll being doing the same Michelle. It's just a shame they don't make laptop monitors like desktop types for suitable calibration. Oh well, soon I hope!

I hate liquid near any of my gear. My desktop is rather safe though, could spill a pint or better on it and there would be nothing worse than having to clean it up.

When I am out on photowalks etc I NEVER let the wait staff bring me water. When they ask me if I would like water I hear, "Would you like me to kill your camera"?

Luck is good buy some sort of lottery ticket and remember who reminded you to do so. If you lose I never told you to do this
