Default Setting up a Facebook Page

This has NOTHING to do with photography.
I have a friend in NY (publisher of a small niche publication) who wants me to set up a facebook page and twitter account. I would recommend they do a youtube as well, but that might have to wait. In any case, she wants to fly me up there to do the job. Another friend also in publishing is interested in having the same while I am there. (We are all friends). I've done this all before - sucessfully - but it was always part of my job. I've not done it as a contractor.
Before you advise me against doing business with friends, I always do. Over the last 20 years, we've all worked for each other at one time or another. And we've all survived.
I have no idea what to charge.
Have you or a friend paid a consultant to set anby of this up for you?
Help!
Thanks for your input on this.
Patricia

For very good friends I handle it the same way I handle family.

1. Pay my all expenses - yep even food
2. And then charge them something that makes you feel good for doing the job.
3. Make it a trip that has a second goal. That way when they go fish you have something else that makes the trip a no loss situation.

This is how I get my mom to pay for my Route 66/urbex trips in her neck of woods.

Thanks. that's about where I was headed. Am still stumped on a dollar figure, but eventually that will come.

You'd be surprised at how many businesses are paying for this now. It would involve setting up FB business page, Twitter, linking to each other and linking to the co. website. Training personnel the kinds of things to post to generate real interest. Using coupons, contests and giveaways. Setting up events and eblasting them. It's more of a PR/marketing assignment. When I was at the opera, I had two blogs, two facebook pages, youtubes and twitters going for different aspects of the company. And we still paid someone $500 a month to add posts and generate interest.

I have a very good friend who lives in London. I'd gladly visit them for the weekend, but he insists on employing me to do work for him over the weekend.. I fly over on the Friday and back Sunday evening. I charge him slightly over the going rate, that covers flights and accommodation, and other costs, he let's me stay at his place, I pay him for accommodation at local hotel rates.

With both our wallets fat, we usually go out on Friday and Saturday nights.. By the end of the weekend neither of us have any money left, but we're not out of pocket and we've had a good time at his employers expense.

Suggest you do something like that.. You'll have lots of fun, and it's nice not to have to worry about the cost for once..

That's pretty funny, Jon. Sounds like a great plan!
Both my friends are business owners, so it IS coming out of their pockets. LOL. But I'd also get the chance to see my sons in NY, so it would be a win-win no matter what I charge.
I will be spending a weekday with them in their offices teaching their employees how to administer the pages.

Hmm.. So they're going to be making money from your work?? Are they successful or struggling? If they're successful I'd have no scruples about charging them the going rate, if they're struggling, then maybe cut them a break in return for favours in the future.. The thing is, having a friend do something like this means they can lean on you and get a bit extra out of you, I don't see why you should be out of pocket AND have them have the benifits that come with being mate.

And seeing your kids is a benifit, but that's not the reason you're in NY.

HOWEVER, I was chatting to a friend about work the other day.. I've been working some incredibly long hours recently, and the truth that was said was fairly simple.. If you lost your job because you wanted to spend more time at home with your family, would your partner stand by you and help you through the difficulties.. Yeah.. Most probably.. If you lost your partner to someone else because you spent too much time at work, would your employer stand by you and help you with the difficulties? Would they fk... Kinda puts things into perspective really.. Go to NY..

Charge them the going rate if they can afford it, otherwise whatever you think they can afford, and have some fun with your kids.. Life's for living, not working!

Ha! Got that right! Except I am currently unemployed and I believe that one of the reasons they are doing this is to help me out. LOL Neither of them is making big bucks, but they're doing alright, so I will probably charge a little less than the going rate. We've all three been friends for ages and we have all worked for each other and have seen each other through good and bad times. that's why this is so hard to price! Thanks for the insight.
