Default Photography in Tibet Suggestions

Hello. This is my first post but I have been hanging around the forums and articles for about a year.

As the title hints, I am going to Tibet on my vacation in the middle of August. I will be spending some of my time around Lhasa, but I will be traveling around the country with a tour group (the only feasible way to travel in Tibet).

I am writing to get some advice on things I should bring with me to make the most of my trip. Any filters or equipment you recommend? Any things I should be worried about or aware of?

Here is my list of my equipment I am going to bring for sure:
  • Canon XS
    Tokina 11-16mm f2.8
    Canon 18-55mm kit lens
    Canon 50mm f1.4
    Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 non-usm
Polarizing filter for my canon lenses (I will probably pick up one for my Tokina, too.)
    Light tripod

Do you have anything to add?

Thank you in advance,
Mike

Yeah.. Photographing in mountains usually leads to blown out highlights from the snow.. I would suggest you take 1 polarising filter, the diameter being the largest diameter lens you have, probably 77mm.. And a set of step down rings so you can use it on all your other lenses.. And also get yourself some ND grad filters.. The soft grad kind is great for mountains because you manage to hold back the sky, and the graduated part over the snowy peaks helps hold them back.. I'd recommend HiTech filters as a reasonably priced alternative to Lee.. And a couple of filter holders.. The single "wide angle" holder and the the multi holder.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot something.. An absolute "Must Have".... A ticket for me!

You might want UV filters and cleaning supplies. It's dry and dusty.

Thanks for the advice.

Im slightly worried about getting filters that i havent tried out, the bulbous front element on the Tokina lens and possible extra vignetting . So i think i might head down to my local Yodobashi camera and try out some filters. Has anyone used Marumi filters?

That’s an excellent time to go to Tibet. During August there are so many festivals celebrated in Tibet. There is Tukbe Tseshi, Labrang Rikda, Ganden Thangka unveiling, Shoton Festival (most important) and Ongkor Festival. More than scenic photography, you will get a chance to get photos of vibrant and colorful festivals. Don’t forget to take filters.
