So, I cheaped out and bought a backdrop stand with a 10' x 20' black muslin cloth. The stands are cheap but sturdy and will do the job for what I need. The muslin is really, really thin though, to the point that I can see right through it. I'm thinking that I can get a couple of cheap sheets and sew them to the back, or just hang them behind when I use this backdrop. I won't go the cheap route when purchasing back drops anymore. Any advice in the meantime? It also came bundled up in a carry-bag, and the wrinkles are pretty tough to get out. The lady that came last year to do our family photos had a very similar set up, except with a thicker muslin.
I'm thinking that if I place the subjects far enough away from the back drop and open the aperture wide open that the wrinkles will be blurred out and not noticeable? I've got some experimentation to do but thought I'd check in to see what others do. Thanks! |

Use black velvet instead. Definitely not too thin and if you roll it up it won't wrinkle. And it just absorbs the light. Costs a little more than muslin but worth it.

Thanks for the tips! I've also put in a complaint with the seller of the thin muslin. Who knows what they'll do. I've asked them to send me a second one, free of charge, but I'm not holding my breath!
