Default event advice.

Ok looking for some advice. I have been asked to take pics of a cub scout summer camp.

1, backpack or should bag? The backpack will be easier to carry but it is easier to change lenses with the shoulder bag.

2, advice on getting posed shots, Im a landscape guy, this is not my specialty and im dealing with a bunch of hyper cub scouts.

Thax, and any other random advice is OK too

Backpack or shoulder bag really I think depends on you and what you have and want to take.

As far as posing. The only thing that comes to mind is think team photos. And fast shutter speeds. Kids dont like to sit still. Look at your yearbook for examples of team photos. And dont try to force kids to stand still for too long. Use the multiple shot setting to fire off a few frames. You'll usually have someone blinking or looking away. Sometimes using multishot can get the frame your looking for. Make it fun and goofy. Kids love cameras. Take a serious shot, then take a goofy shot where everyone is making a silly face.

Cub Scout summer camp...probably a lot of things happening, activities, etc. Capture those moments, candid/documentary style. Tell all of the little stories that camp was about. Include human elements (cub scouts) in some landscape views. How about picking one of your more flexible focal length lenses to shoot with more so you don't have to worry about changing lenses so much? Get the whole group shots when the time and opportunity is right. And, don't let the camera become your ball and chain...make sure that you get involved and enjoy yourself and the surroundings, too. Be creative and have fun!

What's what I was hopeing. I'm actuly one of the counselors so I figured I would use the 30 1.4 most of the time. It's also nice because I can use the 1.4 to isolate subjects. I was going to use the 70-300 when I'm off duty for those tighter "all smiles" type shots.

Your right. I'll try to keep the posed shots to a min.

Sorry for the long and rather useless thread. Its my first time doing an event. And as a landscape photographer, this isn't what I'm best at doing.

Thanx

Take lots of photos and get (almost) in their faces early on. The kids will get used to you being there and you'll get much more candid shots of them doing things and interacting with each other, rather than hamming it up for the camera. Helps if they already know you as well.
