Default Shutter speed setting on Nikon D40X
Good day

I am still learning to use the manual settings on this camera. The suggestions for shutter speeds are a little confusing.. They are listed as + and - settings from 1 to 4000 on the negative side and1 to 30"" on the + side. How would I set this, for example, to 1/400 sec.

Hi and welcome to dPs!

Simply put, if there is a " after your number that means your number is in seconds (3" = 3 seconds, etc). If there isn't (125, 350, 4000) it is a fraction of a second (1/125, 1/350, 1/4000 respectively).
