Talking Back To Film

So I've been shooting (digital) for almost 12 months now and have had a heap of fun and made a decent bit of cash on the side from doing things like promo shots, a few functions and such and recently I've had the apparently cliché desire to grab a 35mm SLR from the 70's with a 50mm lens, pick up some film and shoot old school for fun.

The last time I shot film was when I was a kid in 90's. We had an SLR not unlike an Olympus OM or Canon A series. Mum sold it to Cash Converters (pawnbroker) for $15 in 2000! I remember doing a tiny bit of dark room development in high school.

I've bid on both an Olympus OM10 and a Nikon FG-20 both with 50mm lenses. Hopefully pick up one of em. Looking forward to this!

How many of us digital only photographers have gotten the film bug since starting photography?

My "other" camera is a Holga. Haven't used it in quite a while though. When I do get the "film bug", that's what I grab. I used to have a Nikormat FTN when I first learned photography. But I sold it to an ex roommate.

I still have four F-1's, two F-1N's and an A1 with motor drives, a 24mm f1.4, 85mm f1.2, 135mm f2.0 and a 300mm f2.8. Plus a shit load of ISO 100, 400 and 800 film that's been in the freezer since December 2001. Sold my two T-90's and 17mm, 20mm, 35mm, 50 macro, and 200mm lenses. Also have a Nikonos IV with a 35mm.

They've been locked up in a gun vault since I switched to digital. I tried giving them to my oldest son and daughter when they took high school photography classes, but they were too damn lazy and didn't want to hang out in the darkroom. "Film is dead!", they said. So, I purchased digital cameras, taught them photoshop and how to print. Guess I should sell the gear, one day. However, if that equipment could talk and the stories they were tell.

Wow that's a collection. Could make a bit of cash outta that. I guess I'm just finding digital so "accurate", easy, quick that it sometimes takes the mystery out of taking photographs!

In fact, I've been eyeing the Fujifilm x100 ever since I found out about it, and even though it's digital, I've gotten so used to having a big fancy DSLR that I'd like to step back and use something smaller and more portable, but still get good results. Don't have any money for the x100 though.

Nick look at the Nikon fm2n also..

I majory got the film bug about 2 years ago after shooting digital it just does not feel as real anymore. After clicking a digital shutter like 200k times its not special. So for professional I shoot digital. IE weddings portrait sessions and so on. For art I shoot film. Architecture city scapes and so on.. Im loving trying different films.. Kodak ektar 100 rocks.. make sure to shoot it at 65iso.. I love taking my time and shooting in full manual. The fm2n has helped me allot in thinking about exposure because it is in exactly 1 stop increments. So I now think of light and camera settings in one stop increments. It has helped me tremendously.

Anyways I have way to many cameras to list but my current active working 35mm is my Nikon FM2n with a converted to AI 50mm f1.4 lens from the 60s and I have a normal 50mm f1.8 and 135mm f2.0 lens. I want a 20mm lens at some point.. It has a MD-12 motor drive but i kind of am avoiding using it because im afraid I wont be discipline and will burn through film. I scan everything into the computer via a epson V500.

Note the Nikon EM in this pic is not working ATM

New Nikon Film Equipment

Film Used.

Its funny I actually started a similar thread last week

What film cameras do you use or have?

I think there needs to be a section for film photography on the site.. Because we scan them to digital. well most of us do.

Here is my flickr film set..

I have considered dabbling again in film. If for no other reason than to try out the Holga I hear so much about. Plus I think it would be fun to have another non slr camera that I am deriving and income from.

Meanwhile I will have to settle for my Kodak M580 and my Holga presets in LR. I burned such a pile of cash last month to get into the gallery that there is just no money till next month. So far I have broke even and made some bills - but I digress.

Awesome. Will keep an eye out for the FM2N. I'm currently bidding on an Olympus OM-10 but will keep looking. I totally agree, as much as my knowledge of photography keeps me above the pack of "I just bought a DSLR!" users, it's become such a commodity that I want to really just think about what I'm taking because I have to use shot sparingly, even though I'm generally sparing in taking my shots. The instant gratification thing loses it's wowfactor. I take a picture, it's there. Woopdedoo. I want to wait to see what I've taken. Some suspense so to speak!

I'd say if I wanted to try film, I would probably just grab my husband's Canon Rebel K2. He bought it for his art credit in college. Even though that class taught him jack other than developing.
