Default Flat Screen Monitor and Circular Polarizer

So I'm sitting here at work today, minding my own business as always. I decided to snap a couple pics which included my flat screen monitor a couple feet behind the subject (my feet). The monitor was on, but in the photos, it was black. It just so happened that I had the Circular Polarizer on the lens. On a lark, I removed the Polarizer, and there popped the screen. I put the Circular Polizer back on and could make the screen image completely disappear by rotating the filter. Maybe this is common knowledge, but I sure did not expect it....

Glad to see I'm not the only one who ties a knot in their laces to keep them centered.

Yeah, I remember my dad explaining liquid crystal polarisation to me when I was a kid in the mid 80s. I thought it would be (fairly) common knowledge.

Another example is that I went into the store to pay for gas the other day (still wearing the sunglasses) and when I was supposed to sign the deal for my card, she said sign on the line and I said "what line? it's all dark"

My Father and I are always keen to learn how things work. We used to build and fix things all the time. I remember him dismantling a calculator to show me how the LCD screen had a polarised plastic layer above the glass screen which he removed then showed me how you could use polarised sunglasses to see the screen just the same.

My old man and I were very much like that as well, only instead of electronics, it was mechanical. Nowdays its me teaching him electronics like he was teaching me mechanics. Yep, I can rebuild an engine AND build/rebuild/repair computers. It saves a crap load of money in my house.

Same here - I did almost 25 years as a tech and I build all my own computer stuff.

I had to learn the hard way - NEVER EVER EVER open a lens.
