If it works, it will be a fantastic tool. For example, one of the biggest challenges of taking a self portrait is getting the focus right; if you just had to concentrate on posing yourself and could then pinpoint focus on your eyes in post (rather than trying to get in the ballpark and relying on sharpening to create the illusion that you nailed it), it would be so much easier.

That said, I am a little bit sceptical. It does seem a little too good to be true. It isn't April 1st and modern cameras can do many things that would have seemed magical just a few years ago but I am still left wondering whether it can really fulfill its promise at an affordable price.

There's a write up in the current issue of Pop Science on a German version. It's called Raytrix. However with a $30K price tag, I doubt there will be many takers. I'm curious about the cost of the Lytro. So far, I haven't seen one.

It's a pretty cool idea though. Gotta say that it sure piques my interest. Costs will go down, but whether it's something that's ever going to be really affordable remains to be seen.
