i shoot a D3100 nikon...i think aspect ratio is 3:2 which makes sense...i notice with my NX2 software for editing that came with the camera i get options for cropping such as 3x4 , 8x10 etc....i dont crop often and prefer to always crop with the camera....but the proportion is different.....leads me to wonder what happens if i order an 8x10 print...how much will i loose there???....i have recently had prints made and this wasn't an issue i ordered 5x7's with a small black border around the image and when i put the border on it scaled the image a bit smaller and left a nice even white border outside the black, just like the old fashioned dark room days....my question is how much image do i loose with un-simular proportion sheet and how do i prevent that from happening?

I understand the topic, but I'm not clear on the question you're asking. So I'll make up some stuff and maybe it'll be the answer to the right question.
Even if you print 4x6s, you'll probably lose some of the edges. Most photo printing these days is "borderless", where a little bit of the photo falls off the edge all the way around. The exact amount is unpredictable. For the other aspect ratios, you can tell from your cropping options in NX2 what you'll get. Which is rather the point of the cropping options: so that you can choose what gets kept and what gets cropped. |

4x6 native aspect ratio you lose 0 5x7 you lose 1/2" 8x10 you lose 2 inches exactly. 11x14 you lose 2.5 inches. 16x24 native aspect ratio you lose 0

For this reason I try to always allow a little extra room around my compostion in camera, when I remember - to allow for various ratios.

thank you all that was perfect....i have just started shooting digital....i started to buy a digital years ago when my cannon AE-1's and old Mamiya C-33 were stolen (havent shot much since college) but was too overwhelmed by it all to bite on anything then.... shame really because i forgot what it adds to life....but there are still issues that confuse me this image sive vs aspect ratio being one....i use to develop my own black and whites and i always just left a border in white around the black border from the negative but have noticed this "borderless" may of doing things....i may need to develop a feel and leave room....i just like doing it all in the camera
thank you all again |
