I am not writing to whine.
Recently my daughter got semi serious about her photography. I took her on some urbex locations and she did well. Has an eye for it but not the skill. Last night she also got her first encounter with copyright problems. Anyway last night she started a twitter account and decided to lift a picture my wife or I took at the mobile Vietnam war memorial wall. I say either as we took some shots that were very close. I think it was my wife's shot. Anyway she was asked to give credit or remove the image by my wife. Like a typical teenager she got all pissy about it. She eventually changed it and again to a copyrighted image that was not hers. This time it was not one of ours so we dont care. I think she will learn this the hard way - what do you think? What would you do to send the message home clearly?

If she lifted a different image, the consequences could be much more serious..Especially if it is one within Getty's, Istocks, or Masterfiles Library, they have been actively filing lawsuits or threatening such. Maybe she needs to be directed to the copyright.gov site?? Heres some interesting reading if your interested

I say teen - I mean she is 18 now. Naturally she thinks she knows everything.
![]() Fortunately some of this is wearing off to an extent.

Firstly I'd like to commiserate with you on having a teenage daughter - mine is nearly 16 and can be a lot of hard work sometimes.
I think if it were my daughter I would try to sit her down and explain why it is wrong to use other's photos without permission/credit. Sounds like you might not get very far with the reasonable approach though, maybe she will just have to learn the hard way. Unfortunately if her friends are all doing it she won't see a problem with it - although just because the majority does it doesn't make it right. My daughter is also keen on photography but the only pics I've seen on her facebook page are hers - perhaps you could ask your daughter why she feels the need to post someone's work and not her own??
