Default What photo magazine do you read? If any...

Hi all! I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it anywhere, so I thought I'd start anew.

I'm just wondering if anyone follows any particular photography magazines and if so, which ones are most popular.

For example, on occasion I pick up Digital Camera and Digital Photo Pro. And just recently spotted a mag called Life Images that I intend to pick up next time I'm at the store.

I was just hoping some of you folks could toss in your ideas! Cheers!

I have been reading Digital Camera Magazine since it was first published and am now also reading Digital SLR Photography. I enjoy them both but that other one you mentioed sounds interesting.. unfortunately I doubt it is available here in the UK and the international subscription is a bit heavy for me at the moment.

I subscribe to Popular Photography and Outdoor Photographer. Each has a slightly different emphasis, but I like both. Popular Photography has a nice mix of in-camera technique, post-processing tips, and gear reviews. Outdoor Photographer tends to focus more on travel destinations, but also has techniques and reviews.

I don't subscribe to any photo mags at the moment, but I've been known to pick up Popular Photography or Shutterbug.

Before I'd spend the money to subscribe, I'd browse the photo magazines in the bookstores for awhile, buy one here n there, see more than one or two issues to see the 'steady offerings', ya know?

I like magazines, I'm always on the lookout for one that looks good.

Shutterbug seems to be a favorite of mine right now. I like the camera reviews, and other information that have provided in their articles.

I read Practical Photography when I can find it. I also get Photography Monthly, again, when I can find it.

I'm not a huge fan of camera tech rags, as the info given in them is generally fairly easy to find on the internet for free. I have a 3 year subscription (gift) to American Photo, which is okay, but not fantastic. The articles are generally pretty good, but it's not a particularly good looking magazine. And dear god, the ads. They suffocate the articles.

Cue JPG Magazine.

Big, thick (almost card-stock) pages that are beautifully printed. No ads - instead, different sections of the magazine will quietly boast they are 'supported' by brand x, and give that particular brand a mention on that section's title page. The idea behind the magazine is that readers will submit their best work (usually with a given theme in mind) and then the readers of the magazine will vote for which shots should appear in the issue. I admittedly have only read the most recent issue, but it's a really remarkable magazine that I intend to subscribe to. Besides the user photos, there are also quite a few very useful and well written articles that appear in every issue.

Thank you for all the ideas so far. I've picked up Shutterbug once before but had forgotten about it - good to see it's a popular one. I'll have to pick it up again soon!

Keep the ideas and opinions coming if you've got them!

I don't subscribe to any, but I gravitate toward JPG Magazine when I'm browsing at the bookstore.

Something else fun I just learned: when magazines that don't sell are replaced with new ones, the old ones have their covers torn off and sent back for credit. The mags themselves end up in the dumpster. If you're not afraid of diving, you can come up with a bunch of free issues.
