Default lens vs photoshop

i was wondering why people say they wont buy some lenses unless they are getting paying jobs and the work pays for the lens. i think it is different for me in that since i am just starting and they have all the info on the web i am able to make different choices that some people that have been doing it for awhile and have amassed several lenses...since it is just a hobby for me i can wait and save for a lens i want.

if someone wont buy a lens do they rely on photoshop or some other post production program to make up for the lens? can these programs replace a good high end lens? is a high end lens really needed with some of these programs and the amazing stuff they can do??

No, it depends on what you take pictures of. Most photojournalist and sports photographers I know want a fast lens (such as 2.8) so that they can take pictures in low light conditions.

No! those programs don't replace a high end lens, even though there are many who say that they will.

Lenses don't do amazing stuff.........photographers who have mastered their equipment do.
Learn what your camera and lenses can and can't do for you

Unless you are a doctor, lawyer or some other person who has more money than sense and think that if they purchase the very best they will get amazing pictures, then go for the top notch gear.

If not, Just go out, take pictures and have fun.

50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8 lenses are at a reasonable price. It is worth it to have one good prime lens. Id buy the 50mm f1.4 if you are using a crop body and an 85mm 1.8 if you are using a full frame sensored camera. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search...112+4288580242

Why are so many people down on using the 85mm on a crop body? I like mine so I don't have to get so close. Personal space issues.

Or the 35mm 1.8 if your a landscape photographer.

The thing is.... GOOD lenses cost several thousand dollars, yen, euro or pounds.. I very much doubt that you could tell a beginners photo shot with one compared to a beginners photo shot with a cheap alternative..

Save up if you want, but don't think it will replace skill and experience.

As for photoshp.. I take photos, I don't do graphic design, thats a whole different genre, for me, PP is about making a good photo better, it's not about rescuing a poor one, although I have seen some camera mags talking about photoshopping in a different sky or whatever, that's not photography, it's a different kind of art, and not for me.

All you have to do is step back a few feet to get the crop you want.

Though that works less well if you want a crop and a certain perspective

I'm not down on the 85mm, i like both, but for someone who is just starting out, I think the 50 is a good all around lens because you can get close but also have a wide enough angle to use it inside. the 85mm is equivalent to the 127.5mm on a 1.5 crop and is good for doing portraits, but indoors is a little too much of a magnification for anything else but close head shots.
