Default From the Edge With Peter Lik

Has anyone caught this show on the The Weather Channel? Am I the only one who feels like it's the Crocodile Hunter with a camera? I would like him to talk about his thoughts on the photo rather than how dangerous it might be.

I love it. I have my DVR set to record it. Some of his shots that he takes arent that fabulous. Others, are the ones that get put up in his galleries. I don't think its meant to be educational,..more this is what I do, this is what I'm willing to go thru to get the shots that have made me successful. If you want shots like mine, then you have to be willing to hike up a mountain, trudge thru a canyon and almost get sucked into quicksand, possibly fall thru ice on a frozen lake,..etc. He's not just Crocodile Dundee with a camera. Google him and you'll find out more.

Yes, I know who he is. He's an incredibly talented photographer. Instead of telling us how dangerous the ice is, the mountain is, the whatever is, I would like him to explain why he composed the shot that way he did. Not EXIF stuff, but why he aimed the camera where he did and not, say, 20 degrees to the right. I want to hear some of what's in his head while he's taking the photos.

Maybe it's just me but the show is mostly a walk with a beautiful photo at the end of it.

He sort of does that,...just not to the degree of what your talking about. Which I don't think is how the show is meant. I think it's supposed to be a walk with a beautiful photo at the end. I don't think it's supposed to be educational in any way.

I dont know really, you could always contact the people of the show and tell them that you suggest that he talk more about why hes taking that particular shot. But if you pay close attention, he does kinda do that. You just have to sort of read between the lines,..and get past what your used to.

This sounds like I'm getting irritated, but I'm not,..I know how it reads, but thats not how it's meant.

Sure, like I haven't seen that on the internet before.

Just kidding.

I guess we are the only ones here that has seen the show.

I'll try reading between the lines the nest time.

I'll try to check it out if it doesn't conflict with the NBA Finals.

I watch the show every time it's on, but mostly to see the shots the video crew gets. I think they get much better shots than Peter. It's also fun to listen to him complain about the weather. The show is basically a Peter Lik infomercial

I agree. He does somewhat, kinda, meagerly attempt to explain why he wants the shot he's trying to get but he's certainly not telling us anything new or any 'secrets' to a good shot. I think most of us know about sunrise/sunset, framing, composition, etc. as far as landscape photography goes. He doesnt say anything about lenses, f stops or anything technical (although he did mention slow shutter speed in one show when he was trying to capture a waterfall, but he didnt say how slow).

I think the show is trying to appeal to a large audience, not nessarily to photog's. I dont think the show will last very long, although I do try to watch it, when I can

Btw, anyone know what camera he uses?

He uses a few different cameras. Sometimes he goes digital sometimes he goes film. I'm not sure which brands. I enjoy the show,..but if its not your thing, then its not your thing. I probably enjoy it because I want to do exactly what hes doing. But I want a family life too,...as far as I know hes not married, and has no kids. Already have the Hubby, just waiting til he gets back from deployment for the kids.

I think you all might be looking for it to be educational and somewhat like a tutorial, and thats not how its meant to be. It's not a video on YouTube for you to learn from. It's a show. I mean, if you really know how to use your camera, your gonna know what settings to use anyways,..right? So, its more about the amazing locations. and just following him around. You have to pay attention. There was one shot that he took I think of the coast somewhere in Hawaii, I told my GF that was watching it with me that I loved the contrast of the colors of the water, and the sky. Right after I said that, he said it. Think of it as looking at a website for inspiration.
