Default flickr go pro or go somewhere else?

Hi guys...

my flickr account is quickly approaching the 200 pics photos... and i'm still undecided on it... i like it as a storage (low res... not backup) so that i can post pics to various forums... but flickr itself, i find it to be quite boring... not a lot of friends use it... and plus you dont really get meaningful exposure/feedback-to-improve on it... the groups setup is just places where people post to get some bit of exposure but even then not so much... so i'm not sure if i want to pay money for it...

is there another alternative site to flickr for me to try and see if i'll like it more? has to be free to try... where do you store your images online? even better, if there's a microsite that you can actually pull out images that you put there from... maybe you can earn money while you deposit your files as well...

clever idea. i think every single photographer ever would like to earn money as they deposit their files. unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

i love flickr pro. mine expires in like, 11 minutes though. boo. i guess i have to cough up another $25. no big deal. i like having flickr pro.

For the price, Pro makes sense. I have some plug ins for my website that pull photos from Flickr based on the sets I put them in on Flickr, meaning I don't have to think about the content of my website, it sorts itself out.. I also get involved in some of the groups on Flickr.

Flickr is what you make of it.

I like Flickr and consider it worth the money. It gets my full size images (you can limit access to others if you want) so serves as an offsite backup and I also particularly like the tagging. I love that I can query my "database" just by using a URL like Flickr: basswulf's stuff tagged with dps

Over time, I've made a few friends via it and it has been a useful point of contact with people I have met in other contexts as well. I'm less concerned about "meaningful exposure / feedback" although there are groups on Flickr where you could seek that out and it isn't set up as a sales portal. There are plenty of other choices but you will find plenty of people on DPS who are content with it.

Like Wulf, I use Flickr as an offsite storage for my photos. Its saved my butt on several occasions

There are other alternatives out there besides Flickr...

ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket
Dropbox - Simplify your life
Photo Sharing. Your Photos Look Better Here.
500px is Photography
Picasa 3: Free download from Google

to name a few, there are certainly more to choose from. Data storage comes at a cost, consider the number of images uploaded a day. Someone has to pay for the data-center's that house and back-up all of the data.

for $7.77 a month you can get your own web server with unlimited storage and bandwidth. Ive had this one since 2003 and back then i only had about 5gigs of storage, they continuously are upgrading and its been the same price since i joined in 2003, so i would recommend Web Hosting by PowWeb - One Plan, One Price if you want to build your own website portfolio for just $7.77/mo
