I saw the short bit on the news but couldn't watch the full story afterwards. It was quite appalling seeing the animals being tortured before being slaughtered, and so unnecessary! I don't see how that could be a cultural thing. Perhaps someone out there has a different slant on the issue.

The cultural issue is one of seeing animals without any emotion. We have grown up on a diet of bambi and burgers.... never having to deal with the dirty end of the process.

Giving animals names, dog tags and putting words in their mouths is ridiculous. They could achieve a far greater and wider understanding if they went with the basic "NO CRUELTY" message.

Cattle have been specifically bred to feed humans. They have no other purpose. Training the Indonesians would seem the best solution. (unless you motivation is to ban all slaughter)

Cruelty is like pornography. The definition is not solid and as such cannot be used to make law. Unless, you ascribe human qualities to the subject. Such as speach, feelings, etc. These people cannot be reasoned with and to try will be wholly unsuccessful. They are analogous to Wahhabists or the Westboro church people. Just a different use of dogma and religion.

I haven't looked, but having worked at an abattoir for a short time I never will be surprised at the cruelty that humans will inflict on animals, which is why I left. Some people enjoy their work too much and it can get very scary.
