Default I hate people sometimes

Are you familiar with the story of Will Norton? He was the boy who was in a vehicle with his father when that big tornado hit Joplin, Mo. last week. They were literally on their way home from his high school graduation. The tornado started rolling their car and he was sucked out of the sun roof. They searched for him all week, but found him dead a few days ago. I have been watching the story all week, hoping for the best. It is very very sad.
Well, they had started a facebook page "Help Find Will Norton" because they had no idea if maybe he was taken to a hospital or what. The story was featured on CNN so they page got lots of "likes" almost all being very supportive, loving comments.
Well, now they are getting alot of negative comments like "a seatbelt would have saved his life"
The boy had his seatbelt on. You think a tornado with 200 mph winds that had the power to literally level a whole city would not be capable of breaking a seatbelt?
And the boy was an aspiring videographer. He had a whole you tube channel set up with lots of videos. Someone with the username 'godhatesfags" has been posting some nasty comments on all of his videos. Gee, I wonder who would have a username like that? One particular group of freaks come to mind.
What I just don't get is how people can be so mean, so heartless, so unfeeling? Is it the internet? They are essentially annonymous so they can say whatever they want without consequence? Or are people just nasty like that in general? Would they say it to their faces and not care? I just don't understand. This family and the whole community is in pain and suffering like a lot of us could never imagine.

The WBC is planning to visit Joplin when Obama comes, so no, it's not the anonymity of the internet. They'll say the same hateful distasteful things directly to the people. That's how they get publicity.

They might not have thought this plan all the way through, though. WBC gets away with a lot of what they do because a bunch of the congregation members are lawyers and they'll threaten/sue people who cross the line when confronting them. The people of Joplin just lost everything, so what are they going to lose in a lawsuit? I wouldn't be surprised if a few WBC members end up getting a 2x4 to the head, and I, for one, eagerly anticipate such a news story.

Nope, it isn't the internet that enables this. The internet only magnifies the exposure they get. But rest assured that they will reap what they sow. Us normal people have to understand that and act accordingly. It makes me sad that humans can be messed up like that but the alternative is a world devoid of creativity and that is no place I would care to be. Be happy in the knowledge that man has a short lifespan. These people will fade from life soon.

If these people bothered to read their own holy book, they'd notice it says (and Google tells me this is 1 John 4:8 - "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

So how they can then say "God hates" anything is beyond me.. These people seem to be disseinating hate, which, one would assume, is the opposite to what they say they believe..

I'm sorry for this child and his family, what a horrific end. I hope they find their peace in the community they live in, despite certain ugly, misguided, hate filled groups.

I know. I have invested so much emotion into this story that it turned my stomach when I read that they had found him dead. I feel so bad for his father. The news stories said that when his seatbelt broke, the father tried to hold onto him. He had his arms around him when he was sucked through the sunroof. Can you imagine? I have kids and I know that I would feel guilt and hold myself responsible, even though that is not a rational thing to do.

No.. I can't imagine.. I can't possibly imagine the pain and heartache this family, especially the father, has now to live with.

Nicole, I can see your horror is undoubtably real, I think your would benifit from chatting with a friend off line.. I don't mean don't say anything here, I mean that you should also talk to someone off line.. Sometimes things unconnected to us effect us more than we realise, and it's at those times that we need friends, and talking on a forum isn't sufficient to deal with these things..

Take care.

I think they are the worst sort of people and it makes me ashamed that they do what they do.

But putting out there that you look forward to ANY person getting murdered by a 2x4 to the head makes you as guilty as them at propagating hate.

Dont stoop to their level, no matter how much you loathe and hate what they are saying you have to respect their right to say it. That what freedoms are all about. It means everyone, not just the people you like, get to have them.

The best thing you can do to people like the WBC is fight fire with fire, turn their hate into laughter. Link to some good ideas

I find it very difficult to hate people. I often feel sorry for them though. I wonder what that says about me?

Emotional investment in a (distant?) 3rd party is an indulgence I don't recognise. Don't you have enough to deal with in your immediate, personal situation?
