Default Auto Focus Problems

Hi All,

I understand the limitations with autofocus however my Canon EF 15-55 lens has developed some problems.
What happens (particularly at around 35mm) is that increasingly of late the camera will not get focus on subjects that would normally not be a problem to focus on. When this happens, it is then impossible to autofocus on anything at any focal length. The only workaround I have found is to manually adjust the focal ring whilst still in autofocus (I know this is something I shouldn't do) and then allow the motor to try again - which generally succeeds.
This has become painful as I missing shots due to having to fiddle around trying to focus. Typically manual focus is not really the best option for me due to poor eyesight and autofocus has never been a problem in the past.

What could be causing this to occur? Could it be dirty contacts or some other problem? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Could easily be dirty contacts.. Clean them with a soft pencil eraser.
