Default "Photo of the day"

Hi

I'm thinking of starting a "Photo of the day" section on my blog where I would showcase photographs all over the Internet, work that inspires me and is worth sharing with others. Would I need special permissions from the photographers or just a reference to their portfolio would suffice? I'm not downloading anything, just copying a image address onto my site. What do you think?
Thanks!
Bogdan

depends on what type of copyright licensing they have on their images. My websize images have a Creative Commons license that allows the image to be used if given attribution, but does not allow for alterations or commercial use.

Creative Commons — Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported — CC BY-NC-ND 3.0

Other may not allow you to post the image at all.

True, and even if the licensing allows it, you still need the expressed permission from the owner. Also cannot gain any monetary value from it, ie: If you were to do this blog, and also put up ads on the blog for revenue for yourself, you could get sued.

If the license allows it, then you don't need additional permission; you should, out of courtesy, let the photographer know, but it's not required. Also, you're completely wrong about the "cannot gain any monetary value from it". If the use of the image falls under editorial, or fair use, then it doesn't matter if you gain financially from it. Sure, you might get sued, you can get sued for just about anything, but making money off it doesn't mean you'll lose in court.

Why not ask the people? I'd let people show my work if they asked (and kept the watermark / credit link)

Why is that? I'm just sharing some work there. There are thousands of sites out there doing just that.

That's exactly the point here. I'm not using the photos for commercial purposes or anything. I might get money from my blog but I don't see how's that gonna affect the authors.
