Default Travelling Down The Romantic Road

Hi There,
in the Summer I am planning to take a long leisurely drive down through Germany along what is known as the "Romantic Road". Whilst I have explored many of the websites i wanted to know if anyone has any photo tips, good viewing points etc " away from the madding crowd" so to speak?

Thanks very much

If you want to get away from the "madding crowd" get off the "romantic road". It's going to be full of other tourists doing the same thing.

Switzerland is stunning in the summer, especially the Jura at the south end of that road, and because most people connect it with wintersports ( except the Dutch).

In Austria, just across the German border.

Stay two nights
Walk up the hill, cross the border, through the forest & past the lake to Neuschwanstein.
Makes for a great day.

Super food, however be sure to budget for it..
We stayed there on our first trip to Europe in 1999 (I have no idea what it was like in summer as we were there in september)

you chose the wrong time to go to avoid maddening crowds..at least the Southern German part of it. It's full of millions of white campers (vehicles and the white people )that people park along the Rhine in designated areas and then they ride their bikes (both motor and normal) all up and down that part of the world. So good luck with that.

Having said that..
I started in Mainz, nice city. Great market.
Rudesheim itself and take the gondola up the moutain. Nice views.
Rock of Loreley.. nice climb up and good views over the river.
Overwesel.. but it was great because of a medieval festival when I was there, not sure if it'll have it when you're there, but I still suggest visiting it.
Pretty much any of the castles... forgot names, but I saw all of them and none of them sucked though some better than others.
Bacarach was nice. Had great lunch there.
Casteel which is technically on the Mossel river and not the Rhine. (I visited both).
Saw others, just can't think off the top of my head.

Having spent three years stationed in Würzburg, and having done the Road trip several times, I have a couple pieces of advice. I am assuming that like most people you will make the trip from north to south.

My first advice is, don't be too anxious to get on the Road. Würzburg is worth several days. Be sure to do Festung Marienberg, the Residenz and Hofgarten, and the Käppele. One sight which doesn't seem to make many of the web sites about the city is Schloss Veitshöchheim, which was the summer palace of the bishops. The real attraction here isn't the palace itself, but the Veitshöchheim Hofgarten formal gardens which surround it. Finally, if you have time before hitting the Road, spend an afternoon on the Main river on one multideck cruise boats. This will be a good chance to sample the great Franken wine of the region.

My second advice is to allow enough time at the other end of the trip to fully experience the Füssen region. Surely, Schloss Neuschwanstein is the prototypical castle. It's pretty clear that it was in the minds of the designers of the Disneyland castle. And Schloss Hohenschwangau is also worth a visit. The area lakes and the backdrop of the Austrian Alps, make this a good place to kick back and unwind from your Road trip.

Make sure you have plenty of storage for images, and be prepared to take plenty of pictures of interiors,
